The Real Amazing Race

After travelling through 2 countries, 2 provinces, 9 states, we are home in Hudson FL. We went from -10 C. (14 F.) and snowy to 32 C. (89 F.) and sunny. We had 8 meals on the road and NO unhealthy snacks and NO wine.

Yesterday’s meals:

For breakfast we faced to a detour, we had the choice between: eggs, bacon, sausage, pancake, cinnamon rolls; or cereal, yogurt and a banana. We picked the latter one; it was quick, healthy and tasty.

For lunch, we went to Subway. We ordered 1 foot long ham sub with tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers, NO cheese. We split the sub.

For supper, we went to our favourite hamburger place: Five Guys. We ordered a little burger each (we just didn’t feel like splitting it) and ONE order of small fries. As suggested by Martha the previous day, I had checked the nutrition value on the internet: Beef patties: 220 Cal., the buns 260 Cal., the fries 526 Cal. So we each ate about 650 Cal. I know the math seems off but we didn’t eat all the fries. I could have stayed away from the buns but it didn’t mater, my calorie intake for the day was low.

This is not my weighing day but I looked for the damage on my scale this morning and I lost weight! I’m winning the amazing weight race! I’m not reporting my weight before the 29th but I’m exceeding my goal. I was anxious about our trip down but with a little planning, AND sticking to the plan, there was no dent to our new lifestyle.

Enough with the good news, I have the regret to inform you, I slipped to number 2!

Yesterday I was keeping an eye on Andersontam who was the second on this international-challenge-from-hell. You know what happened? Number 4 Elieocks stepped over 26,000 times in the day and overtook us all. I am not giving up, I will step it up today, but if any of you know about a “hit man” that is not too expensive, drop me a line anonymously. : )

Today we have to take one more trip as we have returned to our home which is mostly empty of fresh food, so a trip to the store is in the agenda. I also have about 100 emails to read, comments to comment on, 3 days of your blogs to read and comment. Couple of games of solitaire to play (so to keep my mind sharp), 150 recorded TV show to watch, however, we won’t watch them all today because I have to step outside 25,000 or more times.

Can’t wait to read you all, have a great Friday.

  1. Way to go! You two are doing amazingly well. It's not as hard as people think to eat healthy and actually enjoy it. Even in restaurants! Sometimes I only find one or two items on a menu that appeal to me but that's okay. At least there's something. Your taste buds will evolve over time and natural, healthy food will taste much better. You'll also learn the lingo of what to eat and what to avoid. Words like crispy and fried are not good. They signify that the food has been cooked/deep fried in oil. Instead, you'll start scanning the menu for words like grilled or baked. It takes time to learn all the ways we are tricked in eating food that isn't good for us but with the internet we are able to research! Have a great time down south. And take photos of the beach to make us jealous :)

    1. Thanks Martha, I'm taking notes, a lot of notes :) You are right, it's not that hard if you change your lifestyle. If all you want to do is lose weight and then go back to your old habit, any change you do is hard works.

  3. This is really exciting, Richard. Well done, to you and your honey bunny.

Is your Five Guys the same as ours where the small fries are a lot more than that? Ours just dumps a ton extra in the bag, so I never get them.

Scanning the menu is the way to go, for sure. Keep up the great work.

    1. Thank you Ivy we are out-of-this-world proud of our choices on this trip.

Yes it is the same Five Guys. If you don't take the cheese and the bacon, it's not a bad health deal.

  5. There's no such thing as a "small" fries at 5 Guys!

Man you did an awesome job on the heralthy living while traveling. Traveling is one of those things that people use as an excuse to eat poorly. Keep it up my friend.

Sorry to hear you lost the top spot, but I heard rumor that some person named Elieocks had their knee whacked with a tire iron the other day and they might be out of commission for a while... I'm just looking out for you my friend!

    1. Thanks FD I think the Tonya Harding' strategy works, I haven't seen Elieocks for a while. :)

Just a secret between us, I was looking forward to the trip to have some unhealthy meals. Maybe it will happen when we go back at the end of April but most likely not!

At 5 Guys it was a 'little' fries, not the 'small' one ha ha ha potato patato!
