Arithmetic 101

Far from me to brag about how good I was in school. My grades were average, my motivation non-existent and the best time was recess.

The only subject I enjoyed and was a bit better than average: Maths! You could count on me!

I had stated on an earlier post that my goal was to lose 75 pounds. It was a journey to go from a 215 pounds obese man to a fit and healthy 150 pounder. NO ONE said anything…

I was reading my new blog friend Beth Ann and noticed she had a gadget on top of her page that keeps track of her BMI and weight lost to goal. It’s a small gadget from TickerFactory.

So I added the gadget to my header. It’s accurate from my Feb 22nd weight. When I looked up at my own page, the ticker’s goal was for 65 pounds. “What’s up with that?” I questioned myself. The ticker must be wrong. I must have entered the wrong weight.

NO arithmetic 101 - if you remove 150 from 215, you have 65 left over, NOT 75 like I had mentally calculated earlier.

It means: I just instantaneously lost 10 pounds off to reach my goal. At a pound a week, it’s 10 weeks, folks! I’m so excited, I might just take a 10 weeks break right now! Just kidding!

To attain the goal I had set, I was to first lose 1 pound per week for 40 weeks and then re-evaluate. Would I continue on a 1 pound per week or readjust and go for 0.75 pound or 1.25 pound a week or whatever. I didn’t set a date for when I wanted to reach my final goal.

Now with 65 pounds to lose I have decided to go for a one year term. I started this journey Feb 1st 2015, I must reach my goal by Jan 31st, 2016. No alternative goal, it’s a loss of 1.25 pounds per week (you can trust this calculation, I used my computer calculator).

I am so excited; this is a huge boost to my motivation that was already very high. Have you ever got excited with a mistake you made?

  3. Just too funny... the one that read this post earlier might have notice a note I wrote to myself to "insert the link". I forgot and when I was looking now, I noticed I forgot to insert it.

If I mentioned any one in a post, I will always link to your blog. I think that sharing and credit should always go hand in hand!

  6. Oh, that is great. 10 lbs lost in one painless moment! Except for the knowledge that you're not quite as good at maths at you thought...

Recently I was in the doctor's office and got weighed and measured. 154 cm tall, she said. No, no, I'm 152 cm. I was quite insistent. I couldn't have grown 2 cm at my age, more likely to shrink! But when I got home I worked it out. I had been rounding down 1 inch = 2.5 cm (the only time I think in inches and feet is with height! very old fashioned for Australia and I'm not that old, only 44). I'm just over 5 ft tall. But actually 1 inch is much closer to 2.54 cm. That 0.04 makes a difference when it's multiplied by 60.5. Turns out I'm 2 cm taller than I have thought for the past 20 years. I'm a veritable giant!

    1. In Canada we convert to metric in the seventies more than 40 years ago. I was in my teen at the time.

Today, I still have no idea what is my height and weight in metric. If I get meat at the butcher, I order in pounds. In the fruit department of stores, they will usually put the price for KG but in smaller font they still give the price per pound.

I'm convert for Celcius, liters and KM. But I'm not convert for inches or feet... just too strange to understand why. Our daughters, 27 and 29 years old only know metric.

From now on, we will be spending about 5 months in Florida, we will be back in an imperial system. We will live in Florida to escape the snow (but you don't really know what I'm talking about ha ha ha)
