Day 1 of the No PS Challenge

This morning when I woke up, I did a quick survey of all systems: Heart – beating; brain – Slow (as usual) but functioning; Teeth – All there; Bladder – Oh ya I have to get that emptied before continuing…

I survived day 1! There are just twenty nine more days to go. I know the end will be so sweet!

I encountered my biggest obstacle this morning… No coffee! I take my coffee with some sugar substitutes so because of the No PS challenge, coffee is off limit for me.

Without coffee to boost my morning and get me going, it’s like going to Europe in a row boat. It takes a while to get where you want but you will get there.

So I sat with my laptop, couldn’t read much, couldn’t write my post, could barely find how to open solitaire.

After half an hour, I had absolutely nothing done and it was time to go for my morning walk. How I managed to put on my clothes on and my sneakers is a mystery, I can’t remember!

I walked 14,700 steps. I might have been conscious only for the last half.

While walking, I was thinking about my drinking problem; I don’t like water.

My daily liquid intake consisted of my gallons of delicious coffee, half a diet coke and some sips of water between my coffee and my soft drink.

Without coffee and coke, there is ONLY one liquid available to me: Water! For 30 straight days!

I was at step number 8,678 when it hit me! I could always improve on the water Mother Nature so generously provides. I’ll get a water pitcher and insert lemons and oranges in it. It will be sweeter without being sweet and tastier.

Then I thought I will also get mint leaves and once in a while, add that to the water pitcher. I was so excited, that was all I could think about for the reminder of my walk.

Simple solution to MY complex problem, just genius! Hopefully there is a Nobel Price for great ideas, I’ll be the front runner, Right? Maybe not, I’m sure all of you are already doing something similar. I am interested to know of any good ideas you might have.

  1. I do lemons, limes, oranges, and occasionally my wife will brew some "weakened" green tea just to give my water some flavor. I've also read about people using cucumbers (I have no idea why), and berries to flavor their water.

    1. Not sure about the tea, I'm not a tea drinker and the times I had it, I need a lot of sugar to not taste the bitterness... Limes will be on my list!

  2. You have a lot of wonderful ideas. I like to put lemon in my water. I'm also a tea girl.

  3. I have a tip for you: don't combine lemons, oranges AND mint leaves in your water...

  4. Looks like day one is a success! Perhaps you can train yourself in time to drink coffee without sugar. I used to put two sugars in each cup in the past. Then when I started being more health and weight conscious, I began cutting back 1/2 a teaspoon per week, getting used to less and less over time. Eventually I stopped sugar all together. That was many years ago. Very simple to do and you never have to be without coffee!

    1. Sigh if I could have think about that before... I would have change my coffee sweet content slowly. Now it's too late, I don't take sweet in an form but natural if I can help it.

Any way, I don't want to have addiction to any thing, and coffee was one I didn't want to talk about because I was a user... no more! Coffee is off limit for a month.

  5. Martha I've tried many times to drink tea without sugar but I don't like it. I just never get used to it. I'm make it a week or so then try it with a little sugar again and it's so much better!! I have half a teaspoon, any more than that is too sweet. (Also small splash of milk.) I figure one teaspoon of sugar a day (two cups of tea) plus a bit in dark chocolate is all I have most days so it's not a problem. Now if I could just say that about my salt and fat intake...

My favourite drink is water with a squeeze of lemon. I used to put a slice of lemon in but I found the peel made it a bit bitter. So now I just have a cut lemon on a plate and squeeze about a teaspoon in each glass. I've heard about cucumber too but not sure about that one. Don't like mint in it. And plain water only at night by the bed.

    1. It's certainly not for everyone. I think I'm the only one in my family that doesn't put sugar in coffee or tea. I would like to get into the habit of drinking water with lemon. I think I'd really like that. It's one of those things that I keep saying "I'll do it tomorrow..." And on and on :)

    2. Great idea Natalie, I'll keep lemon or orange ready to added some flavoring to my water. You are not the only one mentioning cucumbers, I'll try and let you know of the result.

  6. dentist told me to stop the lemon water (or drink clear water after) because it is weakening the enamel on my teeth. I now use a gala apple with a cinnamon stick or a granny smilth. Pineapple and/or strawberries are another option I haven't yet tried.

    1. Thanks Lee for the great suggestions. If I was you, I would change dentist for one that is more lemon friendly! LOL

  7. Congats on all your steps.

PS: To answer your question, Frankenberry is Tim.

    1. I have to go back and read some of your previous posts... I'm pretty sure you send Frankenberry outside, so now I guess it was not for him to go do his business LOL

    2. Just want to add... you are one mysterious women Ivy; you don't live across the big pond, I got confuse between your dog and your husband, you boogie boogie, you flour all kind of seeds and you think it's fun... really mysterious indeed! :)

    3. You made me smile here. I am not trying to be a mystery. But yes, making seeds into flours makes for heavenly pancakes. No refined sugars, either.
