Just a Visitor

Last week trip to Québec city made me realize that I had assume wrongly that one day I would move back to my birth place.
It is really strange... so far, every time I would go back home, I was home. I knew the places, had load of memories. I felt confident that one day, I would be coming back to live.
This time around, I felt like I was a visitor. I didn't belong there anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love the city, I think its a great place, it is just not my place anymore.
Since then, I have been questioning myself about where and why would I live somewhere the rest of my days.
1. My 2 daughters
It doesn't mater where they live and why, if they were in the same town, my furniture would be move there. Now they are a great distance apart so I live close to the one that didn't move away.
  1. Town size
Millions of people are just not my thing. Just thinking about traffic, crowded stores and noise is enough to give me nightmare.
  1. Lakes, rivers, parks, nature trail
Without being the perfect outdoor men, I do enjoyed scenery where cement and buildings are not the main sight.
  1. Social life
This doesn't come close to be in the top priorities as most of my social life is done around a camp fire. But I do appreciate a good library, some shows, striptease club and the occasional museum.
What about you, what would be your perfect place to live?

  1. Hi Richard, greetings from Montreal! I was born here and have lived here all my life (I will be 59 this month), and sometimes I feel like a visitor. My mother tongue is English and I am fluent in French (oui, on me dit que je parle tres bien francais!), the more talk about protecting the French language, hijabs, etc., and less talk about people and their needs and safety, the more I feel like a visitor.

    1. Bonjour Linda thank you for your comment,

I think the worst thing about Montréal: The Montréal Canadian hockey team hahahaha

I have family in Montréal, the last I heard from them they were living in Rosemont.

I still wake up at night in sweat: I was pulling my travel trailer and took a wrong turn and end up downtown Montréal in those narrows streets, in rush hour. LOL

    1. I'll visit but if your sister go there to, I'll be your neighbor. There is no problems, just solutions!

  3. I wanted to live out in the country for a long time, but that didn't happen due to my husband's work. Now we are moving back to our home city (I've been away 21 years) and I think it still feels like home there. We'll see when we get there! Canberra never really felt like home to me even after 15 years here.

    1. From the pictures you posted, Canberra looks like a place I would enjoy. I'm sure that when we moved back home we get comfortable very quickly (that is once the stress of moving come back down :-) )

  4. Actually, your list is exactly what my list is. And I also have two daughters! I enjoy being within a short driving distance from them. Now if they ever move far away, well that's another story.

As for big cities, I'm done with that. We left Montreal in 2009 and have never regretted it. Best thing we ever did was relocate to a smaller city with less traffic, less stress and a lot more nature surrounding us! Well, you've been to Kingston, so you know how amazing it is here.

    1. Martha you shouldn't mention Kingston, you know it's one of the best kept secret of a great city... hopefully no one read this! hahaha

  5. I love country/rural life. But we don't want to be in our trailer anymore. We want to own our land. And Tim says, if he can hear someone else mowing, then they live to close.

    1. I didn't know you live in a trailer.

I think to retire you need to own your own place, there is no other way. I know you kids are so far away from that day but it is now the best time to plan for it. You might not pay cash on that purchase LOL

    2. We have a static trailer. We live in a park similar to yours, only ours is a working park and year-round. We had a mortgage on our trailer and paid that off, thank goodness. BUT, we don't own our land. Trailer we own. Land no.

We want our own land. So that's what we're working to get. Lots and lots of land for veggies, herbs and maybe a few fruit trees. That's the good stuff.
